Vamos is one of Hungary's biggest literary stars, and this novel has taken Europe by storm. It is a superb family saga that draws the reader effortlessly through nearly three centuries óf turbulent history. In 1706 a printer named Cornelius Csillag is murdered. His small grandson keeps the record that he has left, the "Book of Fathers", writes the next chapter of the family history and passes it to the next generation, so that it records the political upheavals of an entire nation. The characters are fascinating and Vamos's writing is a magni-ficent, seamless blend of the general and personal.
